Use the code's forms: Record of Completion and Inspection & Testing
The code provides standard forms — the Record of Completion for new work and changes, and the Inspection and Testing Form for ITM — and the AHJ can require them. They capture the information the code says must be documented: system type, AHJ, monitoring arrangement, device counts, circuit classes, battery and voltage-drop results, software revision, and signatures of the installer, owner and AHJ. A contractor's own one-page 'test report' that omits half of that information is a common reason an inspector refuses to accept the ITM record.

On the job
A county fire marshal's office receives 60 annual test reports a month in 60 formats. It issues a policy accepting only the NFPA 72 Inspection and Testing Form or a form containing every field on it. Reports that omit the device-by-device results and the supervising station transmission test are returned — and the contractors who used the code form never notice.
