NFPA 72 code sections · Smoke & Heat Detector Technologies

Keep smoke detectors 3 feet from supply diffusers
Air blowing across a detector dilutes smoke and delays detection, so spot smoke detectors must be located at least 3 feet from any air supply diffuser or return air opening. Where high air-change rates exist (more than 8 air changes per hour in older editions, now handled by the engineering tables and annex guidance), spacing is reduced further. The same chapter tells you not to install smoke detectors where ambient conditions — dust, steam, temperature extremes, exhaust — will cause nuisance alarms; use heat detection or a different technology instead.

Chapter 17 — Initiating Devices
17.7.4.1 smoke detectors ≥ 3 ft (1 m) from supply diffusers or return openings; 17.7.4 Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning; 17.7.1.9 / 17.7.1.11 environmental conditions and nuisance sources

On the job
A conference room keeps alarming on the first cold morning of winter. The detector is 18 inches from a supply diffuser; when the heat kicks on, dust blown off the duct liner drifts straight through the chamber. Moving the detector 4 ft down the ceiling — outside the 3-ft exclusion — ends the false alarms and the fire department's run reports.
