Alternatives are allowed if they're proven equivalent

NFPA 72 does not block new technology or a different method. You can propose a system, method, or device that differs from what the code prescribes, provided you give the AHJ technical documentation showing it is equivalent in quality, strength, fire resistance, effectiveness, durability, and safety — and the AHJ approves it. Equivalency is granted case by case; an approval on one job does not transfer to the next.
