Releasing panels: two detectors, an abort switch, and no shortcuts

A fire alarm control unit that releases a suppression system — pre-action sprinklers, clean agent, kitchen hood — is held to extra rules. The control unit is listed for releasing service, the detection is arranged as the suppression standard requires (commonly cross-zoned or counting two detectors), pre-discharge warning and time delays follow the suppression standard, abort switches are only where permitted and clearly identified, and the releasing circuit is monitored for integrity and protected from accidental actuation during testing by a listed disconnect. A test that forgets the disconnect dumps $40,000 of clean agent.

On the job

A data center's clean-agent system is tested by a tech who activates two detectors without installing the releasing disconnect. The agent discharges. The room is unprotected for ten days while cylinders are refilled, and the company's procedure now requires the disconnect be installed and verified with the panel's 'release disabled' indication before any detector is tested.
